What do you think of the ideas presented on the Tropicana Possibilities Document ? (please help us by referring to the page number on the document)
I think most of these ideas are fantastic, and the style is spot on. The last thing weston needs is another bunch of poor quality chain restaurants and ‘amusements’. Weston needs to prove it can have style, artistic flair and offer something in the way of culture to help it become almost an extension of or to rival Bristol, as a cultural epicentre of the south West. I think there needs to be a carefully balanced mix of art/installations and things to look at, with things people can re-visit again and again, this wants to be used as much by locals as by tourists, so bowling alleys, cinemas, pools, and restaurants will all be very popular as we are lacking much to do in weston after the pier and the high street shops.
I think combining things to do, with highly stylised and creative design will keep the Tropicana unique and beautiful and worth a visit, as well as practical and somewhere to take all the family on a rainy day, or magical summers night. As a soon to be new resident from Bristol, but as a previous resident until my 20’s, I know Weston has a lot of ‘dilapidated
charm’, beautiful scenery and lots of space to be taken advantage of, and all it needs is some new life breathed into it, with some confident and well executed design so people can start to take Weston as a destination seriously again. From my experience of living in Bristol, trendy, industrial style restaurants are full most nights and as you mentioned, there are waiting lists for creative spaces, so both of these would be a hit, combine this with some really cool music space and I think people will start to consider Weston as a possible alternative to the overcrowded and overpriced streets of Bristol.
The range of creative ideas are great but one fundamental question: is the existing structure worth keeping or would it be better (and even perhaps cheaper) to have a new purpose deigned building on the same footprint?
(I live an hours drive away and as a Londoner had all my childhood holidays with aunts in WSM about 60 years ago)
It’s an exciting document. A creative events space is clearly the central idea, which feels spot on provided we can afford to physically transform the building from the ugly pile it is now into something that makes people want to come and exhibit or visit. Let’s not forget that Banksy chose it precisely because it was dismal, but not every artist or performer will buy into that irony. Those stock images of revived industrial spaces are wonderful, but it will take a brilliant architect to bring that level of transformation to the Tropicana on a limited budget. Let’s hope such an architect exists, because if the building is right and the activities well chosen then I truly believe people will come. I’m told that bands always bemoan the chronic lack of medium sized venues, so if some all-weather solution can be found for live music and the beach can be used as a pop-up car park for a few hours every week then surely a steady income stream could result from concerts which could fund more off-beat creative events. I also really like the suggestions for food and drink in the document because if there’s one other thing Weston could do with it’s somewhere lovely to sit with a drink overlooking THE SEA! Not too much to ask surely?!
Keeping the existing building is essential, but also what will be crucial is ensuring the Tropicana is an all year round attraction, which means looking at the possibility of a detachable roof for at least some of the open air area. I like a lot of the ideas in the document, and agree that there needs to be a mix of things to do at the Tropicana, which may also vary according to the season. For me it will also be important that whatever is on offer will attract people from across the country and even the world – just as Dismaland did – a new Tropicana will not survive on the patronage of the people of Weston alone. Consideration will also need to be given to public transport so that people can get to Weston and home again – possibly late at night – without using their cars.
I have just read through the document again, it’s fantastic, just as in the meeting, I felt, wow, this is going to be brilliant, lets do it, then the enormity of it hits home. So I’ve just picked up on a few points, that are crucial:
Harness the energy of the summer of 2015,
Banksy’s contribution must stay and be part of the narrative,
Don’t do too much get started, things will evolve,
Balance between urgency and getting it right,
Leadership/ownership….. delivering appropriate ideas…..
