What additional ideas do you have in terms of content, facilities, events, infrastructure etc ?
I would like the Tropicana redeveloped to include a pool with retractable roof. A ice skating rink to replace the one closed down in Bristol enclosed sunbathing decks with food and drink outlets. A space for exhibitions and concert venue.
Lots of interesting, happening, ideas here from Hemingway Designs to kick start the party. We have an amazing opportunity here, ‘Contemporary Art in Weston?’ Can you imagine this !! Well it happened and generated £20 million in extra revenue for Weston, there was a buzz in the town with all the extra visitors. and all my local friends and family, who went to Dismaland had an uplifting positive experience. Lets capitalise on this and make sure that the Tropicana becomes a center for Contemporary creative practitioners in all fields, art, design, music, film, literature. Art can seems elitist, but it’s not, it’s for everyone, throw in some good food and a cool environment, and we are creating a space that will be an attraction to our holiday visitors, art lovers and locals alike.
At The Theatre Orchard we have been dreaming up an idea that will see a period of playing in and with the space before locking down a fixed idea of what could or should be….This is a first draft of a possible way to think about this:
Tropicana Playground is a series of large scale, artist-led commissions that take over the site and bed down into the community to deliver playful, bold, transformational, themed moments of revelry that draw on and build in our collective memory.
Tropicana Playground is about exploring the impact of the site’s physical, historical, cultural and social character on professional established artists in (caravan shaped) residence. It is about resourcing those creative individuals, groups and organisations to work within the space and with the town’s people to create arresting performance events with and for a range of audiences.
Tropicana Playground invites artistic commissions hallmarked by the placing of community at the centre, bringing a ‘fun palace’ aesthetic where revelry and art combine, and developing ‘regional love’ of the site as a social and cultural playground. Artists will be chosen who are willing to explore the resonances of the coastal location and address this town’s vital relationship with visiting audiences.
Tropicana Playground will build Tropicana’s reputation as an unmissible attraction to the regional visitor population, as the focus of new affection, awe and pride from regional communities and as a play-space for cutting edge, nationally and internationally recognised artists.
Tropicana Playground is supported by a rolling programme of smaller scale ‘positive disruptions’ both within and beyond the site that animate the ‘corridors’ leading to and from Tropicana from college, city centre and housing estate to seafront. This rolling programme includes short bursts of surprising street performance; showcases from the extraordinary next generation of performance makers from WAPA, themed screenings of film shorts; contemporary projection mapping and illuminations; live music interventions and comedy micro festivals.
Tropicana Pool starts now as a series of evening encounters that pool creative thinking and responses amongst the widest possible range of local and regional voices. Tropicana Pool feeds into the current online forum and into Tropicana Playground commissioning decisions so that the artistic programme is built on civic and artistic trust. It begins the process of seeding a growing cohort of volunteers, advocates and ambassadors for Tropicana Playground and creates the mechanism for dialogue between artists and communities.
Tropicana Pool also has the capacity to act as a research group that can help answer questions about the sustainability of Tropicana, sharing what drives people to go out; which ‘hooks’ make the site a long-term prospect and which factors entice the community to come together as family and friends so that a proper mingling of taste, age, experience, expectation can mix.
There are a number of music events at the Trop this summer, which is good, keeping the place open, but we need to be focused on next years events, it would be a good idea to have a ‘dismal’ presence, an ideas stand, where we could get more people involved and get more ideas flowing, can we organise this North Somerset?
